Article: Dr Praful Kelkar's demonstration of Shruti-s on Sarod

By Haresh Bakshi

Praful Kelkar, was born and grew up in Bombay, India. He is currently on the faculty of the Neurology Department at the University of Minnesota’s School of Medicine. Praful's primary influence in music has been his mother, Dr. Sulochana Kelkar (Ph.D.-music), a professional classical vocalist/teacher in Pune, India and his uncle, who played Sitar in Pt. Uday Shankar’s troupe and taught violin and Sitar for many years. Praful studied Tabla for a number of years at a young age. Later he studied Sitar for three years from a disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. He has been learning and performing on Sarod since 1994 and is currently training under the renowned Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

The six videos [courtesy Dr Kelkar] listed below are very instructive demonstrations of shruti-s in our music, as interpreted by Dr Kelkar.

Shruti Demo on Sarod

Part 1 – Intro & komal Gandhar

Part 2 - Komal Ghandhar ctd

Part 3 - Komal Rishabh

Part 4 - Komal Nishad

Part 5 - Yaman & Bihag shruti comparison

Part 6 - diff shrutis of same notes

The readers will realize that the subject of shruti continues to remain relevant, if a little controversial, to our music.

Haresh.
